Parents are being urged to walk to school with their children as part of an international event.
October is International Walk to School Month which aims to celebrate the benefits of walking to school such as keeping fit and healthy, tackling climate change and teaching children good road sense.
Dudley Council’s road safety and travel awareness team is hoping schools will choose a particular day, week or even the entire month to promote walking to class.
Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said:
“I am sure parents, children and teachers will all recognise the benefits of walking to school.
“This month is the perfect excuse to give it a try and hopefully keep it up.”
Schools are already taking part in a range of initiatives to promote walking including a new pedestrian training scheme called Taking Steps. The first phase is aimed at year one and two pupils and continues through primary school. It gives youngsters skills and experiences to be safe and confident when walking on their own.
The council hopes the month-long initiative will lead to more children walking to school all year round.
