Pupils from a Dudley borough school will hit the streets on a mass litter blitz as part of the national Big Tidy Up campaign.
Pupils from Dormston School in Sedgley, along with school staff and local residents, will carry out the litter pick on September 21 from 9.45am to noon.
Around 70 pupils, staff and residents carried out the clean-up last year which will again this year be followed by a barbeque for participants.
The event will kick off a week-long blitz on litter across Dudley borough later this month as part of the national campaign.
Streets and open spaces across the borough will be spruced up as Dudley Council’s award winning street cleansing team takes part in the national campaign, organised by Keep Britain Tidy. They will be joined by community groups in carrying out litter picks.
The council is calling on more community groups such as other schools, scouts, residents associations and church groups to contact them if they want to play a part in the Big Tidy Up. Dudley Council will provide equipment, including litter pickers, gloves and bags and make collections once the litter has been picked and bagged up.
A number of litter picks have already been arranged to take place in the week in addition to the Sedgley clean-up. Also on Sunday September 21 police community support officers will be joined by community groups in Quarry Bank to carry out a litter pick on that day from 3pm. They will be meeting at Sheffield Street Community Centre from 3pm and everyone is welcome to join in. The council will provide volunteers with appropriate equipment to carry out the work.
The council’s street cleansing team, named last year as the best performing team in the country by the Association of Public Service Excellence, will then be carrying out litter picks throughout the week.
On Monday September 22 they will visit Wren’s Nest Road, Dudley from 9 to 11am to carry out a litter pick before going to Springfields Road in Brierley Hill on Wednesday September 24, again from 9 to 11am.
On Thursday they will be sprucing up roads in Kates Hill, Dudley from 9 to 11am and will then finish of the week-long blitz in the Lowndes Road and Bradley Road area of Stourbridge on the Friday, again from 9 to 11am.
Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said:
“We’ve got litter picks taking place to mark the Big Tidy Up across the borough. We are very proud of our award winning street cleansing team in Dudley and we’re sure these community litter picks will help keep our streets and open spaces clean and tidy.”
Any individuals or community groups interested in organising a litter pick this month in their area are urged to contact the council to make arrangements. People should call Donna Rogers in the council’s street cleansing team on 01384 814556.
Nationwide it is hoped around half a million bin bags of rubbish will be collected throughout September thanks to the Big Tidy Up. For more information on the initiative visit www.thebigtidyup.org
