Small Business Rate Relief 2010/15

This relief is intended to reduce the rate bills of small businesses as specified below.

If you have received more than 1 of these forms and wish to apply for relief, please complete a form in respect of your “main” business property only and dispose of the others.

Provided a completed application form is received, eligible businesses with rateable values of below £6,000 will get 50% rate relief on their liability. This relief will decrease on a sliding scale by an estimated 1% for every £120 of rateable value over £6,000, up to £12,000. In addition, such businesses will have their bill calculated using the small business non-domestic rating multiplier.

The relief can only be claimed for one property and is available to ratepayers who occupy:

  • only one business property in England, or

  • one main business property and other additional business properties, providing the additional properties have individual rateable values under £2,600 and the combined rateable value of all the properties is under £18,000. The charge on the additional properties will be based on the higher non-domestic rating multiplier.

Unoccupied properties and properties in receipt of charitable rate relief cannot qualify for small business rate relief.

Any relief awarded will now be granted up until the next revaluation of business properties in 2015 (although entitlement may be reviewed before then)*. However:

  1. ratepayers will need to make a new application if they occupy any additional properties during that period**.
  2. ratepayers who are granted relief for a property within the Dudley borough must inform the Council in writing if the rateable values of any other properties they occupy increase**.
  3. if your business ceases to be eligible during the period in question, the relief will cease.
* You will need to make a separate application if you think you are entitled to this relief before the 1st April 2010. Please phone our Helpline for further details.
** You must notify the Council within 4 weeks of these changes taking place; otherwise your entitlement to the relief will be affected.
Additionally, eligible businesses with rateable values of between £12,000 and £17,999 will have their liability calculated using the small business non-domestic rating multiplier providing they have completed and returned an application form.

The Small Business Rate Relief scheme is funded by a supplement on the rate bill of those businesses not eligible for the relief. This supplement is built into the higher non-domestic rating multiplier.

You should submit your application for relief to the Council as soon as possible.
