Safer Food, Better Business

Safer food, better business (SFBB) is an innovative and practical approach to food safety management. It has been developed to help small businesses put in place food safety management procedures and comply with food hygiene regulations and is based on the principles of HACCP.

There are a number of SFBB packs available that are designed to meet the specific needs of different food businesses. There are packs for small catering businesses, small retail businesses, and restaurants and takeaways that serve different cuisines, such as Chinese or Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan cuisines. There is also a pack for childminders and a supplement for care homes that is designed to be used with the pack for caterers.

What sorts of SFBB pack are available?

Caterers pack

This SFBB Caterers pack has been developed to help small catering businesses such as restaurants, caf├ęs and takeaways comply with food hygiene regulations.

Catering Pack supplement to Caterers pack

The Care home supplement must be used together with the SFBB for caterers pack and does not provide a food safety management system by itself. It is to help caterers and staff working in small residential care homes. It is not intended for use in nursing homes, because there may be other food safety procedures that need to be applied, which are not covered by SFBB, for example a full infection control policy. It must be used together with the SFBB for caterers pack and does not provide a food safety management system by itself.

SFBB for childminders

The childminders SFBB pack is for registered childminders or childcarers on domestic premises who usually provide meals and drinks for the children in their care. If childminders provide meals, snacks or drinks (apart from mains tap water) for children or babies and/or reheat food provided by a parent/carer, or cut it up, they must now comply with food safety and hygiene regulations.

Catering pack for different cuisines

The safer food, better business pack has been adapted for small catering businesses such as restaurants and takeaways that serve either Chinese cuisine or Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan cuisines. It is available in three packs:

Retailers pack

This SFBB Retailers pack is for small retail businesses that sell food, including any food that needs to be kept cold to keep it safe, such as milk. These include small convenience stores, 'corner shops' and confectioners, tobacconists and newsagents.

How can I get a copy of an SFBB pack?

You can download it from the relevant website link (above) and on the right-hand side of this page. Each pack is available to download section-by-section, from the Food Standards Agency website and most can be downloaded as a full version.

A DVD guide has also been produced to help you use your pack and train your staff on SFBB, which is available in 16 different languages. The guide is divided into separate sections for staff or managers, which each take about 15 minutes to watch. You can view it online or you can download a copy to your computer.

If you would like to order any version or supplement to the SFBB packs or order the training DVD call the Food Standards Agency Publications team on 0845 606 0667 or email foodstandards@ecgroup.co.uk.

How can I get refills for my SFBB pack?

Refills for the diary can be ordered from call the Food Standards Agency Publications team on 0845 606 0667 or by email foodstandards@ecgroup.co.uk or downloaded and printed for the relevant pack from the Food Standard Agency SFBB webpages.

Where can I get some training on how to fill in the SFBB pack?

You shouldn't need any specific training to fill in the pack. Try watching the training DVD (also available to order) which has been specifically designed to help you fill in the SFBB caterers packs.

Most Level 3 and above food hygiene management training courses should also go through the skills necessary to understand how to fill in the pack.
