The plans feature work right through Dudley’s historic market place from the junction with High Street all the way through Castle Street to the junction of Castle Hill. It will include a newly designed market featuring 74 stalls, new paving, feature lighting and street furniture.
The scheme will also involve the relocation of the public toilets to allow for the repositioning of the Duncan Edwards statue. The historic fountain will be restored and the Earl of Dudley statue will be reset within a raised lawn.
The design of the market place stalls will also incorporate artwork and clocks while artwork will also be undertaken to improve the mediaeval passages in the conservation area of the town centre including Green Man Entry, Long Entry and Rutland Passage.
Dudley town centre, Dudley market and the bus station will remain fully open and operational for the duration of the scheme.
The scheme will be completed in two phases.
Phase one, which is now complete, includes the redevelopment of Castle Street from the Earl of Dudley statue to the junction of New Street.
Phase two includes the replacement of the existing market stalls and the construction of new ones. To facilitate this element of the scheme, market traders have relocated to temporary stalls situated to the area on the other side of the fountain, with overspill at Stone Street Square.
The project is programmed for completion in the first half of 2015.
Castle Street, New Street and Fisher Street reopened to general traffic and buses on Sunday 10 August.
The three roads were closed to traffic earlier in the year so that works could start on the first phase of the £6.7m redevelopment.
Phase one of this exciting project to transform Dudley town centre as well as the approach from Castle Hill includes, laying high quality natural stone on roads and pavements, creating new car parking bays in Castle Street, disabled parking, a drop off point for park and ride and a motorcycle bay which accommodates three motorcycles.
New lighting columns have also been introduced along with modern street furniture, including seating and litter bins.
The new public toilets also opened in July.
Further works yet to be completed in Castle Street include the lighting of St Edmund’s Church, tree planting improvements to the Earl of Dudley statue and Green Man Entry, which will improve the route between Tower Street and Castle Street.
