Following a successful public consultation in March 2008, the project to create an attractive and welcoming first impression to visitors accessing the town centre from the north and improving links with the historic canal side area is now well underway.
There are three key phases of the project:
Upgrading Lower High Street subway to provide a safer and a more attractive entrance to the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists.
Creating a pocket park on the under used tarmac area at the bottom of Lower High Street to provide much needed seating for students and the wider public.
Emphasising the crossing over the River Stour, from with the town gets its name, through public art.
Phase 1 of the project is now nearing completion with work on the final stage murals scheduled to take place in Autumn 2009.
Funding for phases 2 and 3 is currently being sought.
