Allotment groups encouraged to aim for Green Flag

Posted on:

Dudley Council bosses are encouraging allotment groups from across Dudley borough to apply for a Green Flag award in 2019.

The national awards celebrate the great environmental management and biodiversity that green spaces like allotments offer and recognise the safe, clean, green, healthy and secure environments they provide in the local community.

Volunteers at Abbey Road Allotments have confirmed that they will be working towards their fourth Green Flag award this year. The allotment site, which is based on the outskirts of Halesowen and has 49 plots, is completely voluntary led.

The group first scooped the Green Flag Community Award in 2016 and since then they have continued to be successful with judges praising their community involvement, great management and exceptionally good special needs provision.

Dudley Council provided support to the Abbey Road group when they made their first application for the awards. The authority has since provided a noticeboard and a flag pole to fly their Green Flag upon.

Councillor John Martin, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Highways, said:

I am delighted to hear of Abbey Road Allotments going for their fourth Green Award, they are a fantastic group who are passionate about the local environment.
We hope that other allotment groups will take the chance to have their amazing work celebrated by working with us to apply for a Green Flag award this year.”

Mike Hollis, Secretary to the Abbey Road Allotments Group, said:

We are very excited to be starting work for our 2019 Green Flag Award entry, it is a great platform from which to celebrate and share our hardwork, and I would encourage allotments across the borough to think about applying.
Here at Abbey Road we have plot holders that have won national competitions for showing both vegetables and flowers and also have plot holders that keep chickens, ducks and bees for which we also got praise in our Green flag award.”

All plots at the Abbey Road site are currently occupied. For more information about the site, or to join the waiting list, people can visit: https://abbeyroadallotment.co.uk/index.html

Groups that would like support for a Green Flag award can contact Dudley Council’s parks development team on 01384 815589.
