Dudley service ‘highly commended’

Posted on:

The Dudley Falls Prevention service has been ‘highly commended’ in a national award in recognition of its support to Dudley residents.

The service, which launched more than two years ago is delivered in partnership between Dudley Council, Dudley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust.

It focuses on prevention and recovery and was recently given ‘highly commended’ status in the NICE Shared Learning Awards.

The service helps people at risk of falling to maintain strength, balance and mobility. For those recovering from a fall it offers support to build confidence and regain independence.

The introduction of the service has led to a significant drop in the number of falls for people aged over 65, and the lowest number of hospital admissions for hip fractures for nearly a decade.

Councillor Nicolas Barlow, cabinet member for health and adult social care, said:

This is a fantastic example of partners bringing their expertise together to deliver positive results for the residents of this borough.
Falls can pose a real risk to a person’s health and wellbeing so the team’s prevention work is crucial and I’m delighted our stats show that fewer people aged 65 and over have experienced a fall.
Well done to all those that have worked incredibly hard, this award recognises your contribution and success.

Dr Ruth Edwards, GP and Chair of Dudley CCG, said:

I’m delighted that our team has won such prestigious recognition for the excellent work they do in reducing falls amongst the elderly.
Their work to make people aware of the various risks they are exposed to during everyday activities, is making a real difference to Dudley’s elderly residents and their loved ones, by enabling them to make the changes necessary to live an independent, safer and much improved life.
