Garden waste collections are back

Posted on:

Dudley Council’s popular garden waste collections will return later this month.

The free garden waste collections are set to be reinstated from 28 March and will run until 4 November.

Residents are reminded they should use the green bin to dispose of grass cuttings, leaves, plants, weeds, flowers, small branches/twigs, hedge cuttings and spent compost.

The bins should not be used to dispose of other items, including food waste.

If residents have a lot of ongoing garden waste to dispose of, Dudley Council offers additional chargeable green bins. It costs £31.72 as one-off payment to buy an extra bin and then £40 a year for the collections. More details can be found on the Dudley website,

Residents also have the opportunity to pay £30 for six extra collections to run from November 2022 until March 2023.  This would mean that the scheme is extended by 12 weeks based on fortnightly collections. Residents will be notified when, and how, they will be able to sign up for the scheme during the summer.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for public realm, said:

With spring upon us and brighter days ahead, I’m pleased to see the return of our free garden waste collections, a popular service with our residents right across the borough.
We’re also giving people the opportunity to extend the number of collections they have this year, for a small fee, as we know some residents would like to see the collections run into the winter months.
We collect on average a staggering 22,000 tonnes of garden waste every year, which is taken to a specialist plant and turned into compost. So, this is a great way to repurpose our garden waste.

People can also purchase a traditional compost bin through Dudley Council for £22.50 plus £6.99 delivery or the Johanna ‘hot composter’ for £76 (including delivery), which is below the average retail price. More information is available at –

To find out when their next scheduled garden waste collections are, people can visit and enter their postcode for confirmation of their next collection date.
