Green bin move to maintain regular rubbish collections

Posted on:

Green bin collections have been suspended by Dudley Council until further notice in a bid to keep the regular refuse trucks rolling during the coronavirus crisis.

The garden waste collections were due to restart again on Monday. Council bosses say it will help them maintain regular weekly refuse collections and fortnightly recycling collections while operating with reduced staff numbers.

The situation will be reviewed regularly, and consideration will be given to extending garden waste collections beyond the planned finish date.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre in Stourbridge has also been closed with immediate effect and until further notice.

Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of the council, said:

We are living in tough and unprecedented times, but I want to assure residents we are doing all we can to maintain the key services we all need and rely on.
That, of course, includes the weekly bin collections, and becomes even more important in the light of Government guidance for us all to stay at home unless it’s an emergency.
We will do all we can to maintain regular collections for our residents and at the moment they are going ahead as normal.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environmental, highways and street services, said:

Due to the developing situation and latest advice around COVID-19 (coronavirus), waste services are currently operating with a reduced number of staff.
During this challenging time it is important we resource our most essential services.
We have had to make the difficult decision to suspend garden waste collections, which were due to start on Monday, until further notice.
By suspending the garden waste service we are able to use these vehicles, drivers and loaders to support the general refuse and recycling collections. We would urge residents where possible to home compost whilst they wait for the service to resume.
We will review this decision regularly and as soon as the situation allows we will restart collections. We will also advise about extending the collection period beyond the planned finish date.
The Household Waste Recycling Centre has also been closed by the contractors with immediate effect.
I would like to thank our waste collection operatives for their continued efforts, and all other Dudley Council employees who enable us to continue running our services.
