New free Park Active classes start this weekend

Posted on:

Dudley’s free weekend Park Active classes are changing from this weekend to offer an even better workout.

Starting on Saturday, there will be a single 45-minute fitness session at borough parks instead of the existing two 30-minute workouts.

They are open to people of all ages and abilities. Children are welcome, but under 14s must attend with an adult.

The Dudley Council-run classes take place every weekend in five parks across the borough: Stevens Park in Wollescote, Buffery Park in Kates Hill, Abbey Street Rec in Gornal, Stevens Park in Quarry Bank and Grange Park in Dudley.

Saturday sessions run from 9.30am to 10.15am at Stevens Park, Wollescote; 10am to 10.45am at Buffery Park; and 10am to 10.45am at Abbey Street Rec. Sunday sessions run from 11am to 11.45am at Stevens Park Quarry Bank and 9am to 9.45am at Grange Park.

This weekend will also see trained volunteers who have learnt the ropes under qualified fitness instructors take over the running of the sessions.

Jayne Lacey, 59, who lives in Lye, has been taking part in the Park Active classes at Stevens Park in Wollescote since they began in February 2019.  She has now signed up to be trained as a volunteer instructor to run future Park Active classes.

Jayne Lacey said:

I am really enjoying Park Active. I love exercising and being outside, but for me it’s just as much about meeting a new social group.
I live in Lye but work in Birmingham and don’t get the chance to meet local people. Now, thanks to going to the Park Active classes I am meeting ladies who live only two streets away.
When I found out that we could get training to run the classes, I jumped at the chance. I’ve enjoyed my time at Park Active so much and it would be great if I could share that with others.
It’s also really impressive that all of this is free. The classes are free to attend and we get trained for free as well, so it’s a fantastic opportunity for everyone.

A full programme of the sessions is available at www.lets-get.com/explore/healthy-hubs/park-active and places can be booked via the TGO activate app from the app store. The app can be used to log and track workout details, connect with others in the community, find other activity sessions happening in the area, or to locate the nearest TGO outdoor gym sites.

No additional equipment is required, just suitable clothing and footwear. Participants are advised to bring a drink.
