Mathematicians from 23 primary schools across the borough will do battle to see who will be crowned this year’s Dudley’s Maths Championship winners.
The annual Primary Dudley Inter-School Mathematics Championship is being held at Saltwells EDC on Wednesday June 20. It is split into two age groups – years 3 and 4 (7 -9 year-olds) and years 5 and 6 (9-11 year-olds)
In February the Dudley School Improvement Team ran heats for almost 500 pupils from more than 80 primary schools. The schools that were victorious, and will be taking part in the final, are:
Years 3 and 4: Belle Vue, Brockmoor, Fairhaven, Glynne, Manor Way, Newfield Park, Oldswinford CE, Roberts, St Joseph’s RC Stourbridge, and St Mary’s CE.
Years 5 and 6: Bromley Hills, Fairhaven, Hawbush, Lapal, Manor Way, Milking Bank, Newfield Park, Russells Hall, St Marks CE, St James’s CE, St Joseph’s RC Stourbridge, Straits, and Withymoor.
Councillor Angus Lees, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
We are looking forward to an exciting final. All of the heats were very keenly contested, with the children taking part all a real credit to their schools. It showed we have some very able young mathematicians in Dudley, so it should go right down to the wire as to who lifts the trophy
The winning schools will receive a trophy to display proudly, while there will be prizes for pupils from local and national sponsors. The children could win an account with Dudley Building Society, Intu Merry Hill vouchers or Tesco gift cards. Other exciting prizes have been donated from Boing Zone, Dudley Canal Trust, Dudley Building Society, Intu Merry Hill, Chocolate Bouquets, Helix, Laser Quest, Oxford University Press, Propeller Education, Snowdome, Staedtler, Stourbridge Football Club, Stourbridge Amateur Operatic Society, Stourbridge Theatre Company, Tesco Dudley, and Waitrose Stourbridge.
