Sports pitch investment

Sports pitches and changing rooms across the borough could be in for a boost after the council announced plans for a £120,000 cash injection.

A major review is underway to look at the condition and suitability of changing rooms managed by Dudley Council.

Finance bosses announced a potential spend on the programme of work in the budget proposals for the next three years, which went live today (Wednesday).

If the money is approved by council in the spring next year, it could pave the way for major upgrades of pitch facilities across the borough.

Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of the council, said:

We made a clear commitment to investing in our grass roots sports teams earlier this year, this is about making a serious financial contribution to that promise.
We have to look to invest in sports teams at this level, given the proud record this borough has in producing international sporting stars.”

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member responsible for parks and open spaces, added:

We have award-winning parks across the borough which are home to lots of sports teams. We have to make sure that we not only make them as welcoming as possible, but a viable place for new sports teams. Some of our changing rooms date back to the 1970s and in need of repair and improvement - time is right to do that through this proposed investment.
The proposals are still subject to approval by council but demonstrate how serious we are about improving our parks and open spaces.”

As well as a programme of repairs and upgrades to changing rooms this review will also be looking at the energy efficiency of the buildings and improving some playing surfaces.”

Councillor Harley, who also sponsors Britannia and Brierley Hill Bullets who both play in Kidderminster League, has tasked officers with looking into potential funding sources to finance the work.

The results of the review will then be considered as part of future budget planning proposals before any work is brought forward.
