Recycling Facilities

When items come to the end of their useful life, it’s important to consider the various disposal options available. Most people recognise that recycling is better for the environment than simply burying rubbish in landfill sites. However, many of us fail to consider other options which might be even better for the environment, such as waste prevention or whether items could be reused.

In order to maximise recycling rates at the HWRC, it is suggested that householders sort all waste into the correct containers for recycling on site. Pre-sorting materials before visiting the site will make visits easier and quicker. Any items suitable for reuse should be handed to a site operative.

This site is a major recycling centre with facilities for recycling the following materials in addition to the deposit of general house/garden wastes:

  • Paper
  • Cardboard (please remove any Polystyrene or plastic wrapping)
  • Food and drinks cans
  • Plastic bottles
  • Timber (including MDF, LDF, HDF, chipboard and laminated boards)
  • Green Organic garden waste (For composting)
  • Bricks, concrete, rubble & ceramics
  • Scrap metal
  • Car and household batteries
  • Used engine oil
  • Cooking oil
  • Textiles
  • Shoes
  • Books
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Small electrical items (if disposing of computers please ensure that you safeguard your personal information)
  • Large electrical items (including old cookers and washing machines)
  • Fluorescent tubes & energy saving light bulbs
  • TVs and monitors

Commercial Waste

Commercial waste is not accepted at the Birmingham Road site.

Height Barriers

Height barriers are in operation at the site. The height barrier is set at 6'-6" (1.98 metres) at the entrance to the car park complex. Any vehicles above 6ft 6" will need to make an appointment.

Please note that the use of small trailers (maximum of 1.8 metres) will only be allowed at this site by prior appointment.

Traffic Congestion

To minimise traffic congestion at the site it would be appreciated if users would segregate their waste into the suitable categories prior to visiting the site.
