Childminding - Application Process

Ofsted require all childminders to complete pre-registration training prior to registration.

Pre-registration Childminding: is it for me? Workshop

It is a requirement of Ofsted that prospective childminders complete an initial pre-registration training session. We offer a 2 and half hour briefing session where you will be given information about:

  • the legal requirements and application process

  • childminding as a job

  • additional training courses to help you meet the requirements of the EYFS Statutory Framework

Proffesional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY)

PACEY is a charity dedicated to supporting everyone working in childcare and early years to provide high quality care and early learning for children and families.

Your next step is to complete Preparing to Work in Home-based Childcare course. You are required to complete the following on line units:

NCFE CACHE Unit 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Home Based Care

NCFE CACHE Unit 2 Preparing to Set Up a Home Based Childcare Business.

Register with PACEY to complete this

You have up to 6 months to complete the course at a cost of £238.80. You can apply for a time extension at a further cost of £114 if required.

Childminding UK

Alternatively you could access the online introductory training modules with Childminding Uk

This is an introductory training course at a level 3 standard. The course consists of 5 modules and is CPD Accredited and Ofsted recognised.

You have up to 1 year to complete the course at a cost of £100.

Additional essential childminder training

Following or during completion of the PACEY Units or the Online Childminding UK course you also need to attend the following training courses to meet the legal requirements.

Before registration

  • Next Steps
  • Child Protection Foundation
  • Paediatric First Aid (12 hours)
  • Level 2 Food Safety (6 hours)
  • Introduction to the EYFS (Learning and Development)
  • Preparing for your Ofsted Registration
  • Workshop to Raise Awareness of the Prevent Duty (WRAP)

 Other essential courses following registration

Following completion of your PACEY units or the Online Childminding UK modules, plus the other essential courses as shown above, you are then required to inform the team of your intention to register. Please use our online enquiry form to notify us.

Ofsted require you to complete all pre-registration training prior to granting you registration, you will need your certificate issued by the team to prove the completion of your pre-registration training. We would also like to advise you that the registration process can be lengthy, Ofsted aim to register childminders within 12 weeks of receipt of the application form, and the current application fee is £35 for those wishing to join all three registers.
