Buckpool, Fens Pools and Barrow Hill Nature Reserves

A network of local Nature Reserves within Pensnett and Gornal that exhibit a diverse range of habitat to support wildlife.

Barrow Hill

Barrow Hill Local Nature Reserve is one of the most significant and well-loved areas of green space in the Borough.

Fens Pools

Fens pools consist of Grove Pool, Middle Pool and Fens Pool.  They were constructed as reservoirs by the Stourbridge Canal Company. The Stourbridge canal links Buckpool Dingle and the Fens Pools.

Buckpool

Flowering Rush and Arrowhead are plentiful in the Stourbridge Canal, which run alongside the nature reserves, linking Buckpool to the Staffordshire countryside and the Fens Pools.  Buckpool is a great place to see Kingfishers.

Our wardens

We have three wardens based at Fens Pools, Buckpool and Barrow Hill. The wardens work to maintain the reserve and support use and enjoyment of the site by the general public. This is done by leading and supporting events, educational visits and volunteer activities as well as responding to general queries and requests for information. They also liaise with outside bodies such as Natural England and monitor the overall well-being of the reserve by carrying out wildlife surveys and site patrols.
