The Council will seek to maintain and enhance the environmental benefits given to localities by trees in private ownership by the use of Tree Preservation Orders/Conservation Areas and other legislation where these trees are judged to make a significant contribution to the visual amenity of the locality.
The majority of urban trees are in private ownership, which makes a significant contribution to the visual and environmental qualities of the Borough. The Council has a statutory duty to protect significant trees under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as amended).
The Council will continue to protect privately owned trees by the formation of new Tree Preservation Order (TPOs) where the trees make significant contribution to a locality. The Council will aim to help owners of existing protected trees by endeavouring to provide leaflets on tree care, the TPO system and the selection of suitable tree surgeons. In addition the Arboricultural and Planning Officers will continue to be available to give advice and answer queries on protected trees.
