The Council will encourage the use of native species in planting schemes within or close to nature conservation areas where appropriate to extend and protect these areas.
In order to maintain the value of a site for nature conservation (which are defined in the proposals map of the deposit version of the Unitary Development Plan and covered in Policies NC1-4), the use of predominantly native tree and shrub species is desirable. Planting native species close to these sites and planting native hedgerows helps to encourage wildlife into residential areas and can help link up sites to create wildlife corridors.
The Council will provide information on suitable native species for various locations and their value for wildlife. Developers will be encouraged to use native species within landscaping schemes when appropriate.
