Education Investigation Service

The Education Investigation Service, sometimes referred to as the Education Welfare Service, can be traced back to the very first days of the introduction of compulsory education in 1870.

We have a number of responsibilities and whilst we are an investigation and enforcement agency; at the core of our work we strive to ensure that the welfare of the child is paramount, that their rights to access education is protected and that we identify any unmet needs and any risks of harm.

The service seeks to do this through the concept of parental responsibility and we actively engage parents to ensure that a child’s needs are met; enabling them to benefit from access to education. We work across children and adult services and also work to protect vulnerable adults within the criminal justice system and ensure that their rights are protected.
