We can help you figure out what greater depth looks like in reading and writing and give you teaching strategies to use to help children to achieve Greater Depth. The course will also cover what an outstanding reading curriculum offer looks like so that teachers are supported to build community of readers and are prepared for a deep dive into reading!

•This course will show how mathematical reasoning can be embedded in all KS2 maths lessons.
•We will explore how equipment and images can be used to build understanding and a range of techniques for deepening learning and developing problem-solving will be shared.

Description

  • This course will show how mathematical reasoning can be weaved throughout the KS2 maths curriculum. We look at how learning can be broken down into small steps, and how practical and focused experiences can be used to deepen all children’s conceptual understanding.
  • We will look at how equipment, images and bar models can be used to model different KS2 maths concepts. A range of techniques for engaging all children in rich mathematical discussions will be shared, including the question structures used in ‘I See Reasoning’. We will also explore how opportunities can be provided for children to work at greater depth.
  • A range of lesson examples and resources will be used to show an evidence-based approach for teaching problem-solving. Expect a highly practical, example-rich, thought-provoking day!

Outcomes

  • To break learning into small steps, planning sequences of lessons to build conceptual understanding
  • To represent mathematical ideas using equipment, images and bar models
  • To use questions and tasks that develop and extend mathematical reasoning and talk
  • To explicitly teach problem-solving skills, teaching relating problems together

11th March 2020 - Applying for Education Health and Care Plans

WIDER INCLUSION and SEND HUB – Applying for Education Health and Care Plans

Outline

We have managed to book Andrea Moore to come and deliver a practical session around applying for Education Health and Care Plans. The session will include advice and support about both completing documentation and what information and reports to include.

Andrea has over 25 years’ experience working in schools with children with SEND.

Description

She was a senior Advisory Teacher with the Birmingham CAT (Autism Team) co-writing and delivering Training (including PDA), running parent groups and supporting schools. She was the lead on Sensory Differences and regularly delivered all AET modules. She was also involved in the revision of the CRiSP Criteria (Birmingham SEND Funding) and delivered training to Birmingham staff on how to use it.

Since 2017 she has worked as an Interim SENDCo (Qualified 1999), interim manager of the Speech and Language Dept in a large Secondary Specialist Setting, written and delivered training and supported staff and students with SEMH, Autism and Learning Differences. She has supported SENCO’s in managing their role as well as supporting staff and students. She is a licensed Talkboost KS2 trainer, a trained Person Centred Review Facilitator, an intermediate Team Teach Tutor and holds NCFE Level 4 equivalent OCN in CBT

Outcomes

The training is suitable for SENcos and senior leaders who would like to learn more about the practical side of the EHCP application process.

  • This course will de-mystify how children develop number sense, helping children in EYFS and KS1 to build strong mathematical foundations.
  • We will see how children can learn to calculate using non-counting strategies and play with big mathematical ideas.
  • A range of Ideas and resources for developing reasoning for children in EYFS and KS1 will be provided – an exciting vision for early maths!

  • Research highlights the critical importance of children’s early number skills in their overall mathematical development.
  • This course gives a clear approach for how children develop a strong number sense and learn to calculate in early mathematics. We will explore the important early mathematical experiences that will allow children to develop a secure ‘number feel’.
  • A wide range of free resources that help children to visualise number will be shared. Then, we explore how effective long-term strategies for calculation can be introduced and developed through KS1.
  • Examples will be shared of how fluency in EYFS and KS1 mathematics can grow as children engage with rich problems. A range of new ideas and free resources for Early Years and KS1 teachers will also be shared.

  • model the use of metacognition when spelling
  • provide opportunities for pupils to articulate their thinking.

Dudley Learning Support Services are delivering a full day on ‘Developing an SEN Screening Toolkit’. A practical day, with lots of ideas and time to work on real case studies form your school

Description

The day will include:

  • Analysis of reading, spelling and writing difficulties (basic skills rather than curriculum based)
  • Running Records and Miscue Analysis – a quick, free assessment tool
  • Auditory and Visual Memory
  • Processing speed
  • Reading/spelling tests – evaluation of standardised tests available to schools and alternatives
  • Importance of collating background information (including early milestones)
  • Questionnaires to support initial screening for a range of SEND (e.g. Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia etc.)

Outcomes

24th April 2020 - KS2 Reading Fluency Project: Implications for Classroom Projects

This one-day CPD event will offer an insight into the transformational teaching strategies used in the Herts for Learning KS2 Reading Fluency Project

Description

Furthermore, following the 8-week project period, pupils typically demonstrated the following changes in reading behaviour:

  • increased accuracy – children make less substitutions, omissions, mispronunciations or additions when reading a ‘cold’ text
  • increased enjoyment – pupils read more and are more willing to explore a wider range of literature
  • increased confidence – pupils tackle challenging texts with greater willingness and show improved tenacity in teasing out meaning
  • increased engagement – pupils offer more extended contributions in group discussions about challenging texts

Outcomes

The project draws on proven reading strategies to improve pupils’ trajectory towards the Expected Standard (EXS) in reading in Year 6, including:

  • modelling of fluent reading
  • echo reading
  • repeated re-reading
  • skilled questioning leading to deep discussion
  • selection of well-chosen texts
  • modelling of comprehension skills

Outline

A group of Dudley schools, in conjunction with the LA, developed a project to create a set of very specific statements in core subjects. DAPA can be used in mainstream settings and Michal Pawlowicz, Pens Meadow School and Alison Whitnall, Brier School will deliver training on how to use DAPA in a practical way. As with other Wider Inclusion training, please feel free to bring some real examples with you to work on through the day

WIDER INCLUSION and SEND HUB – National picture of SEND & new resources for SENcos

Outline

In the morning session Andrea Moore (SENco with 25 year’s experience, and an advisory teacher) will give an update on the national picture of SEND, and developments relating to the role of SENco. She will follow this by sharing new resources that are available that you may not know about or have seen.

The afternoon will be an open session, with the Education Psychology team and other members of the LA SEND team. There will be an opportunity for you to share with the panel what the LA can do to support Wider Inclusion in our schools. Please come with ideas and practical suggestions to move forward.

Exploring how attachment develops and its role in supporting the mental and psychological well-being of children and young people in schools. The impact of ACES will also be covered so that the wider context of the child’s experience can be considered. Emotion Coaching will be introduced as an approach to understanding and responding to behaviour linked to attachment and trauma-based difficulties.
