A Zebra Crossing consists of thick black and white strips across a road with an orange flashing “belisha” beacon on either pavement. It gives pedestrians the right of way, however you must make sure that all traffic has stopped before you use the crossing.
Don't forget to use the Green Cross Code, even when you are using a Zebra Crossing. If there is a School Crossing Patrol working on the crossing, always follow their instructions.
Drivers must not park or wait in the areas marked by zig zag lines - they must only stop to give way to pedestrians on the crossing or in circumstances beyond their control.
Vehicles will need more time to stop when the road is slippery.
Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing.
Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing.
Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.
