The West Midlands Casualty Reduction Scheme is designed to help reduce crashes and injuries. During 2002 in Dudley there were 1,351 casualties, the result of road crashes. Quite apart from the pain and suffering to victims and their families these crashes cost the economy over £51 million. This partnership is probably best known for its safety cameras, but the enforcement of speed limits is only a part of its operations.

After several successful trial schemes the Government announced in August 2001 a national roll out of safety camera schemes. These schemes will eventually cover virtually all areas of the UK.

Each scheme operates within its Police area and involves partnership agreements with local bodies including the Local Authority. Each partnership can only retain revenue from speeding fines to cover the costs to operate - not profit.

Dudley is just one of the Local Authority partners in the West Midlands. We are all aware of the detrimental impact traffic speeds have on safety in our communities and the schemes are an important part in encouraging everyone to avoid travelling at excess speeds. Educating drivers about speed is an important aspect of the scheme which is actively supported by all the WM local authority Road Safety Groups.

Further information and the location of Safety cameras can be obtained from the partnership web site.
