All young people attending school/college in Dudley (or living in the borough) can enrol for music lessons with Dudley Performing Arts at just £9 for a 20 minute individual lesson.

The lessons will take place either at school, at our base on the Waterfront in Brierley Hill or online - whatever works best and is possible in these uncertain times. You can find out everything you need to know including how to enrol on this page and we recommend that you enrol as soon as possible to guarantee that lessons can start after the Easter break.

Certain instruments are provided free of charge and you can find out more information including how to enrol below.

DPA Direct

'DPA Direct' - an offer that includes face to face tuition in schools where possible, face to face tuition at our base at the Waterfront in Brierley Hill or at home via Teams/Zoom.

After you have enrolled we will talk to you about where you want the lessons to take place. Where possible we will teach in schools and a list of where this is possible can be seen below.  The list is updated regularly and if your school does is not listed you may want to talk t them about options.

It may be that a student receives some lessons online, comes to us one evening for a face to face lesson and has a couple of sessions in school. We will be as flexible as possible to make music lessons possible in the current situation.

The offer is open to existing students and we are welcoming new learners on the following instruments:

  • Clarinet (i)
  • Flute (i)
  • Trumpet/Cornet (i)
  • Trombone (i)
  • Tenor Horn (i)
  • Violin (i)
  • Viola (i)
  • Cello (i)
  • Guitar (acoustic/electric)
  • Bass Guitar
  • Keyboard/Piano
  • Drum Kit
  • Voice

Where instruments are marked (i) DPA will provide an instrument at no charge where stocks permit

To access online lessons you will need a minimum of a smart phone and wifi but you can also use laptops or tablets.

To get started, please enrol your child. Below there is more information on how the process will work. Please read the notes carefully as this explains more about the process you are agreeing to.

After you have enrolled and online safety

You will be contacted by one of our teachers from a secure work email ending in either @dudley.gov.uk or @dpa.dgfl.org and this will include all the information you need. In most cases this will be the teacher you know contacting you.  These are the only two email addresses we will use regarding online lessons. Communication about these lessons will only take place by email so please only ring the office in an emergency.

Note: Contact about these lessons must be between our teacher and a parent or responsible adult. Our staff will not correspond with children’s email addresses.

Our teacher will ask you about your preferences for how the lessons take place and we will do every thing we can to make your preferences work.  This will include the option of face to face in schools (where schools can accommodate), face to face lessons at our base at the Waterfront or online lessons in your home.

For online lessons the teacher will be at home, dressed professionally and will conduct the lesson as if they were in the same room at school. We need you to ensure that the lesson in your home takes place in a suitable room, that children are dressed appropriately and ensure that siblings or others do not wander into view.

A responsible adult must be present at the start of the lesson and remain in proximity throughout. Ideally, we would like this person to remain in the room to help children with practice or work for next week.

The session must not be recorded or shared by either teacher, parent or student.

The session will end if our teacher feels that any of the above is not in place or if they feel that anything is not as it should be. If this happens they will email you and the Head of Dudley Performing Arts.

The Lesson

Face to Face in Schools

The lesson will take place in the best space available. You will need your instrument and any other music required - it will not be possible to share music/borrow from other people. In some schools shared instruments may be possible (e.g. drum kit/keyboards) but this will need to be negotiated with the school.

Face to Face at Resonance, Cable Plaza, Waterfront West, Brierley Hill, DY5 1LW

The lesson will take place in a purpose built rehearsal room. Air conditioning with HEPA filters will be in operation and all touch points will be wiped down between students. Free parking is available and on arrival you will be required to sign in and have a temperature check. Parents can wait in the cafe area where a drinks machine will be available.  Face coverings should be worn when entering/moving round the building but are not mandatory during the lesson. (normal exceptions apply)

Online Lessons

As a minimum, you will need a smart phone and have either the Zoom or Teams app downloaded (we will tell you which). Please experiment with these apps and see which works best for you. The lesson will work better on the highest quality equipment you have.  A tablet will probably work better than a smart phone and a laptop probably will work better than both.  However, you know what works best in your house, please decide accordingly.

The lesson may work better if the student wears earphones and you might experiment with this (including one earphone on, one off etc).

Background noise can be a major problem during online tuition, especially in a music lesson.  Try and find a quiet place in the house. NB – if this is a bedroom the responsible adult must be visible at all times.

Find somewhere stable for the phone, tablet or PC and be prepared to experiment. The teacher may ask you to move the device to get a clearer picture of how the student is playing the instrument from time to time. You may also need to think about lighting in the room. For example, a bright light behind the student’s head will make it hard to see what is happening.

Make sure that any books, printed music or backing tracks etc that may be needed are ready before the lesson starts.

Fees and Agreement

The spirit of this arrangement is to make music lessons available to as many students as possible. It is not possible for all children to have music lessons in schools at the moment and DPA Direct is intended to allow as many as possible to access tuition. Our intention is to return to 'pre covid' arrangements when the situation allows but will make an offer similar to this available for the summer term if necessary.

A fee of £54 is payable in advance as you enrol.  This is for 6 individual 20 minute lessons that will be delivered  in schools, at Resonance or online. We will discuss options with you after enrolment has taken place to find the best solution for students, Schools and DPA staff.

The best solution for students may include some lessons taking place online, some in schools and some at Resonance (Waterfront Brierley Hill). Where schools will accommodate lessons it is our intention that all (or most) sessions will take place in school.

Tuition will normally be delivered by the DPA teacher who would normally teach the required instrument at the student's school. Where this is not possible DPA will provide an alternative option. A full refund will be made in the event that DPA are not able to provide a tutor.

In the event that DPA are not able to deliver all lessons you will be entitled to a refund for the missed lesson (£9) or to be credited for future DPA services.

Refunds are not applicable where lessons are missed through no fault of DPA or should a student not wish to continue part way through.

Whilst we hope that all students will continue with DPA, after this course of lessons neither the school, DPA or parent is contractually obliged to continue.

DPA will provide at no extra cost the following instruments if required: (subject to availability)

  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Trumpet/Cornet
  • Trombone
  • Tenor Horn
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Cello
  • Oboe
  • Bassoon

Instruments are loaned free of charge and are to be returned immediately should tuition stop. Parents will be required to sign a guardian agreement before any instruments can be handed over. After you have registered we will contact you to find out if one of these instruments is required.

Responsibility for DPA instruments currently loaned via schools agreements will transfer to families during this temporary arrangement. Whilst DPA are not making a charge for the loan parents are responsible for repairs caused by negligence and for replacing any loss.

By applying for lessons you are agreeing to these terms.
