Your health will improve with more physical activity!

Dudley Council and many local GP surgeries are dedicated to help you achieve the best possible health and quality of life. This does not just mean looking after you when you are unwell, but also helping you to take positive steps which will improve both your physical and mental well-being and allow you to make the most of your life.

Although many people know that physical activity is good for them they are often unsure how to take the first steps to becoming more active. For this reason we are working together to offer you guidance and advice on how to increase your activity levels.

Dudley Council are committed to improving the health of the people of Dudley. The Steps to Health scheme will encourage you to improve your health through physical activity.

What are the benefits of becoming more active?

Being more active can help:

  • Make you feel more energetic and lively
  • Improve your health and body shape
  • Keep your muscles and bones strong
  • Provide you with a sense of achievement
  • Help achieve and maintain a healthy weight
  • Keep your joints mobile
  • Relieve stress and tension
  • Provide an opportunity to meet new friends or renew acquaintances

How much exercise do I need to do to keep healthy?

The Department of Health recommends the following: 

  • Adults should aim to be active daily. Over a week, activity should add up to at least 150 minutes (2½ hours) of moderate intensity activity in bouts of 10 minutes or more – one way to approach this is to do 30 minutes on at least 5 days a week.
  • Alternatively, comparable benefits can be achieved through 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity spread across the week or combinations of moderate and vigorous intensity activity.
  • Adults should also undertake physical activity to improve muscle strength on at least two days a week.
  • All adults should minimise the amount of time spent being sedentary (sitting) for extended periods.

Individual physical and mental capabilities should be considered when interpreting the guidelines.

What does the scheme entitle me to?

Those eligible to join the scheme will be entitled to access Crystal, Dudley and Halesowen leisure centres. 

Activities available include:

  • Public swimming
  • Lifestyles gyms
  • Fitness classes
  • Squash/racketball*
  • Badminton*
  • Running track at The Dell Stadium

How much will Steps to Health cost me?

For up to 12 months, you are entitled to a 50% discount for selected leisure activities. Alternatively, you can purchase a membership for the discounted price of £15 per month (direct debit) for up to 12 months.

To access the gym you will be required to have an induction and purchase a data key. A gym induction costs £10 (pay as you go). Inductions are free for direct debit customers. A data key costs £11 for all gym users.

After you have joined the scheme and enjoyed the 12 month discounted period, you will pay full price, as the scheme is not renewable.

You will not be accepted on to Dudley Council Leisure Services Steps to Health programme if you currently hold or have held a membership at Crystal, Dudley or Halesowen leisure centres within the last 6 months.

You can only access the Steps to Health scheme for one continuous 12 month period.

 

How long does the scheme last for?

The Steps to Health scheme is a one off referral which cannot be renewed. The scheme allows access to the leisure centres for up to 12 months from the date of joining. After the 12 month period you will have the option to access the leisure centres as a full price client. Other membership offers are available.

You can only access the Steps to Health scheme for one continuous 12 month period.

Eligibility criteria

To join the Steps to Health scheme you will need to:

  • be registered with a Dudley GP, work in Dudley or live in Dudley
  • not meet the recommendation to be active for 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week, every week
  • see a doctor or nurse and complete the recommendation letter
  • take the letter to one of Dudley Councils four Leisure Centres
  • complete an application form at the Centre
  • cannot be an existing customer or used the centres within the previous 6 months
