Your health will improve with more physical activity!

Dudley Council and many local GP surgeries are dedicated to help you achieve the best possible health and quality of life. This does not just mean looking after you when you are unwell, but also helping you to take positive steps which will improve both your physical and mental well-being and allow you to make the most of your life.

Although many people know that physical activity is good for them they are often unsure how to take the first steps to becoming more active. For this reason we are working together to offer you guidance and advice on how to increase your activity levels.

The Sport and Leisure Service in partnership with the Public Health are committed to improving the health of the people of Dudley. The partnership currently operates two schemes to encourage people to improve their health through activity.

How much exercise do I need to keep healthy?

The Department of Health recommends that all adults take part in a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, at least 5 times a week and we are here to help you achieve that.

Eligibility Criteria

To join the Steps to Health Scheme you will need to

  • be registered with a Dudley GP
  • not meet the recommendation to be active for 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week, every week
  • see a doctor or nurse and complete the recommendation letter
  • take the letter to one of Dudley Councils 4 Leisure Centres
  • complete an application form at the Centre
  • cannot be an existing customer or used the centres within the previous 6 months

What does the scheme entitle me to?

Those eligible to join the scheme will be entitled to half price admission to any of the 4 Dudley Council Leisure Centres for a period of 12 months to participate in any of the activities listed below:

  • Public Swimming
  • Lifestyles Gyms
  • Fitness Classes
  • Squash / Racketball
  • Badminton
  • Running Track at The Dell Stadium

If those eligible prefer to pay monthly they can pay by direct debit for £15.00 per month to receive the same benefits as our Lifestyle Memberships.

What are the benefits of becoming more active?

Being more active can help:

  • Make you feel more energetic and lively
  • Improve your health and body shape
  • Keep your muscles and bones strong
  • Provide you with a sense of achievement
  • Maintain your weight within a desirable range
  • Keep your joints mobile
  • Relieve stress and tension
  • Provide an opportunity to meet new friends or renew acquaintances

Can I rejoin the scheme?

After participating for 12 months on the Steps to Health Scheme customers cannot rejoin and therefore will pay the full price on activities, unless they are eligible to join the Options+ Leisure Scheme or other membership schemes.

Exercise Referral Programme

Dudley Council actively supports the Dudley Exercise Referral Programme, which is now available to all residents registered with a Dudley GP. Patients referred to either Halesowen Leisure Centre or Crystal Leisure Centre (Stourbridge) benefit from a initial 12 week tailor made, supervised, fitness programme which allows them to access the gym, classes (subject to health condition) and swimming at half price.

After the initial 12 week period patients are supported and advised to make their new active lifestyle a way of life. To support this patients who have successfully completed the 12 weeks in the fitness suite are offered the same benefits as the Steps to Health Programme, to continue for a further 3 months.

Patients with a wide range of medical conditions have already benefited from the Exercise Referral Programme, which is now open to all patients. If you are concerned about your health and do not currently meet the Department of Health recommendation then book an appointment with your GP who will refer you to an appropriate participating centre/facility.
