Trading Standards

The work of Trading Standards impacts on every resident and commercial enterprise. Trading standards officers visit, inspect, and test, every type of product or service. We support businesses and the public by giving free legal advice so that the highest standards of quantity, quality, price, description and safety are maintained. We can help with consumer and business advice, safety and standards, fair trading and food, agriculture and animal health.

Law Enforcement

We may take action against businesses who disregard the law. We enforce Legislation on:

What We Don't Do

Unfortunately, there are a number of things we can’t do, as the help we can given you is restricted by the powers given to us by Acts of Parliament.

We cannot:

  • Obtain a refund for you, but we can advise if you may be entitled to one;

  • Close a business down, but we can ensure that the business complies with the law;

  • Take action where no criminal law has been broken, but you may be able to sue the business yourself;

  • Recommend a business, but our Fix A Home list can help you find a tradesperson.

Fix-A-Home

The Fix-a-home scheme is a list of trades people who have been vetted and selected to be able to carry out maintenance work in your home.
