Maintenance and cleaning of public rights of way

In most cases we as the Highway Authority are responsible for looking after the surfaces of public rights of way

We are not, except by agreement or for some structural reason, responsible for fences, hedges and free standing walls. Maintenance of such boundaries lies with the adjacent landowner. Failure to properly maintain those boundaries, to the detriment of the users of the path, could lead to legal action.

The ownership of the land over which the path passes does not lie with us unless we are the freeholder of that land.

Issues that may occur include

Street care and maintenance

Our ongoing street maintenance programs and repair works ensure that getting around the borough is as easy as possible.

If you have any concerns or problems regarding a public right of way or would like to report damage to a public right of way, please contact us.

Street cleaning and cleansing

We keep roads, pavements, public car parks and shopping areas clean of litter, debris and larger items of rubbish that have been dumped.

Maintenance of the gates on public rights of way

Where gating orders are in place we are responsible for the maintenance of the gates that have been placed to restrict the use of the public right of way.
