Dudley's Historic Environment

The historic environment is all around us and forms the physical backdrop to our everyday lives. Dudley, in particular, has a rich and diverse character which has been shaped by the activities of people in the area over a long period of time. As a result the individual townships of Dudley have their own distinctive character that make Dudley a very special place in which to live and work.

The Historic Environment service works to conserve the locally distinctive historic character of Dudley as a whole, both within historic townships and also in the spaces between and beyond them, rather than simply focusing upon special elements or areas.

Our Historic Environment Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) sets out detailed guidance on our requirements for protecting and enhancing Dudley’s historic environment, and identifies the evidence base that justifies the our approach.  This complements the Governments vision and strategy for Heritage and the Historic Environment published by DCMS in 2017.
