Statutory Listed Buildings in Dudley
The ‘Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest' is made up of buildings or structures considered to be of national importance because of their architectural or historic features. They are protected by legislation in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. There are 3 categories of listed buildings, Grade I, Grade II* and Grade II. The statutory list is compiled by the Secretary of State hence they are referred to as 'Listed Buildings'.
There are approaching 300 statutorily listed buildings and structures in the Borough and this number increases yearly, examples include the Grade I listed Church of St John the Baptist, Halesowen, the Grade II* listed Dudley drinking fountain or the Grade II listed Memorial Archway at Stourbridge War Memorial Athletic Ground. A lot of the listed buildings in Dudley were placed on the statutory list in the 1970’s and a large majority are a product of 18th and 19th century industrial growth however there are earlier structures that show the development of building style over time such as the Grade II listed timber-framed cottage, Whitefriars, Church Lane, Halesowen and also later structures dating from the early 20th century such as the 12 Tecton Structures located within grounds of Dudley Zoo.
Once listed, the whole of any principal building makes up the listing, including the interior. Any pre-1948 objects, structures and buildings that formed part of the land within the curtilage of the principal listed building at the date of listing, and were ancillary to the principal building, are considered to be part of the listing, and consequently treated as Listed Buildings in their own right. Listed Building Consent is required from the local planning authority to alter or extend a listed building in a way that affects its character or appearance as a building of special architectural or historic interest. Early pre-application advice with the local planning authority is strongly advised for proposals that relate to a listed building.
