We are currently reviewing Small Business Rate Relief in preparation for the upcoming revaluation on 1st April 2026, when new business rates multipliers will take effect. This review ensures that all ratepayers will be billed correctly.

If you have recently received a letter regarding your Small Business Rate Relief, it relates to the relief you currently receive for meeting the eligibility criteria.

We carry out these reviews because changes to a business or its rateable value can affect the level of relief applied. Some ratepayers may not be aware of how these changes impact their business rates bill.

Before you start the review, please ensure:

  • You are authorised to act on behalf of the business and can evidence this if required
  • Have your evidence i.e. utility bill, sales receipt etc dated within the last 3 months ready to upload to the portal
  • Know what sector your business operates in by using the link/FAQ below

What is Small Business Rates Relief?

Small Business Rates Relief (SBRR) helps eligible small businesses reduce their business rates bill. It is available to businesses that occupy properties with a low rateable value.

You may be eligible if:

  • You occupy one property with a rateable value under £15,000, or
  • You occupy multiple properties, with one main property under £15,000 and additional properties each under £2,900, and the combined rateable value is less than £20,000.

Relief Amounts

  • 100% relief for properties with a rateable value of £12,000 or less
  • Tapered relief for properties between £12,001 and £15,000
  • Small business multiplier may apply for properties under £51,000

Why are you asking what sector my business is in?

The billing of business rates is changing in 2026/27. As part of our review, we are asking businesses to confirm the sector they operate in. This helps us understand the local business landscape,  prepare for future support schemes and ensure accurate billing.

  • Retail – e.g. shops, hairdressers, florists
  • Hospitality – e.g. cafés, restaurants, pubs, hotels
  • Leisure – e.g. gyms, cinemas, museums
