Education transitions can be defined as the process of starting or changing education settings.

Typical transition points are:

  • Starting Nursery
  • Moving from early years to primary setting
  • Moving from primary to secondary setting
  • Moving from secondary setting to work, college or university

This process involves adapting to multiple features of the new education environment, new routines and processes, new social networks, and developing relationships.

Starting or changing schools can be an exciting, yet apprehensive, time for all children.  However, children or young people with special educational needs and disabilities often find transition more challenging than their peers and may require additional support.

Dudley Education Transitions Guidance aims to;

  • Develop consistently positive transitions for SEN children and young people when moving between education settings.
  • Support successful and sustained engagement into the next phase of education.
  • Share practical approaches and strategies to support children and young people with a range of additional needs.
  • Signpost towards additional resources that may be valuable.
