Dyspraxia - Information for Family Members of Neurodivergent Children and Young People

Having a child or young person with dyspraxia can be both rewarding and challenging. Understanding the condition is key to providing effective support and reducing frustration for both the child and the wider family.

Dyspraxia can affect many aspects of daily life, from getting dressed and using cutlery to managing emotions and participating in social or physical activities. These challenges can sometimes be misunderstood by others, leading to feelings of isolation or frustration for the child and their family.

Here are some ways families can support and better understand their child with dyspraxia:

Learn together: Encourage siblings and extended family to learn about dyspraxia. The Dyspraxia Foundation offers accessible guides for parents, siblings, and grandparents to help them understand the condition and how it affects daily life.

Celebrate strengths: Children with dyspraxia often have unique strengths in areas such as creativity, problem-solving, empathy, and determination. Recognising and celebrating these can boost self-esteem and resilience.

Be patient and consistent: Tasks that seem simple to others may take longer or require more effort. Providing consistent routines, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and using visual aids can help children feel more confident and independent.

Encourage independence: While it’s tempting to step in, allowing children to try things for themselves (with support) helps build confidence and life skills.

Support emotional wellbeing: Children with dyspraxia may experience frustration, anxiety, or low self-esteem. Creating a safe space to talk about feelings and offering reassurance can make a big difference. Resources like Young Minds offer advice for supporting children’s mental health.

Connect with others: Joining support groups or online communities can help families feel less alone. The Dyspraxia Foundation runs local groups and online forums where families can share experiences and advice.
