About Placemaking

Placemaking means creating good quality places. The process includes collaborating with designers, community members and stakeholders.  It is an inclusive, responsive, and adaptable approach to community development and design. It reimagines and shapes the public realm to create spaces that are vibrant, accessible, and meaningful to the people who use them.

It aims to do this in ways that reflect the unique culture, needs, and aspirations of the local community. Its purpose is to improve urban and economic vitality and promote people’s health, happiness and well-being. It does this by enhancing the quality of life that comes from the interaction of people and their surroundings. As a result, placemaking is a powerful tool for building resilient, connected, and thriving communities. Our team includes colleagues from Urban Design, Landscape Architects, Historic Environment and Regeneration. We also collaborate with many other teams across the council.
