Holy Trinity Church was also known as 'The Church of the Glass-makers'. There are many famous names on the headstones in the churchyard. It is also famous for its wonderful stained glass windows, many of which were sponsored by the local glass manufacturing families.

The painting shows the interior of a packed church c.1900, with a strict hierarchical sitting order. 

Martha Alice was the daughter of Henry Gething Richardson and Elizabeth Richardson, part of the glass-making Richardson dynasty.
