- Respond to requests for advice and information from providers of early education, designated teachers in maintained schools and academies, and providers of alternative provision in their area about individual children supported by the local authority.
- Make advice and information available to education settings to improve awareness of the vulnerability and needs of previously looked-after children, including good practice on identifying and meeting their needs, and guidance on effective use of the pupil premium Plus funding.
Choosing a school
Children who have experienced loss, neglect, or trauma may face challenges in managing relationships with teachers and peers, as well as adapting to transitions such as moving schools or classes. When selecting a school, parents should consider the following questions:
- Are staff trained to understand the effects of early trauma, loss, and attachment?
- What support is provided for children during transitions, such as changes in year groups, teachers, or moving from primary to secondary school?
- How does the school facilitate the development of friendships among students?
- Is there a comprehensive strategy in place to assist children with attachment issues, and is this integrated into the school’s Behaviour Policy?
- How the pupil premium allocated, and what facilities are available to support students, such as a nurture room or dedicated support groups? Is individual attention included in students' schedules, and what measures are in place to promote friendship-building?
It is important to note that while different schools may adopt varying approaches to utilizing pupil premium funding, these methods can all be effective in their own right.
Once a suitable school has been identified, maintaining effective communication with the school is essential. Parents should actively engage in meetings with their child’s assigned teacher, as well as the Designated Teacher for Previously Looked After Children, to ensure that their child receives the necessary support. Encouraging open discussions with their child about any difficulties they encounter and areas where additional assistance may be needed is also beneficial.
Schools and educational institutions have a statutory obligation to support previously looked after children. This requirement applies to children from the age of two in funded educational settings, continuing through to the end of Year 11 in maintained schools or academies.
