It is now widely recognised that there is a link between design and crime and that careful attention to the planning of towns and to the design of estates and individual buildings can help reduce crime.
Urban Design is an interdisciplinary activity involving planning, architecture, art, landscape and highways design. It promotes a common purpose amongst the various disciplines therefore it is not the concern of just one profession. Essentially the service is about promoting, creating, communicating and delivering places that people like to live work and play in.
The Dudley Community Safety Partnership is committed to making Dudley a safe place in which to live, work and visit. Its role is to plan strategically, commission and oversee services that tackle crime and disorder and address drug and alcohol misuse. Dudley's Community Safety Partnership is called Safe & Sound.

This Supplementary Planning Guidance advises how improvements can be made to the physical environment that will help to mitigate crime, fear of crime and antisocial behaviour.
The guidance aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding community safety, challenges poor design and develops an appreciation for the responsibility and contribution designers of the built environment have in reducing crime.
