Dudley Learning Support Service (LSS)

A team of highly experienced specialist teachers with additional Special Educational Needs (SEN) and/or Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) qualifications who work within the principles and guidelines of the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice: 0-25 years (2015). We are committed to working in partnership with schools, parents, governors and other professionals to raise the standards of achievement for pupils with SEN.

What we do

We work in a variety of ways to ‘support schools in supporting pupils’ by offering services in the following areas:

  • Assessment of pupils
  • Consultation and advice
  • Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) support
  • Training
  • Specialist teaching
  • Intensive Learning Unit

  • An allocated Specialist Teacher
  • Up–to-date advice and support re: SEND topics
  • A team of highly experienced Specialist Teachers, who have or are studying for additional SEN and/or SpLD qualifications at Level 7, enabling the team to undertake GCSE Access Arrangements Testing in line with current JCQ regulations and the assessment and teaching of pupils with Dyslexia
  • Many of the LSS Team have previous experience in the role of SENCo within Dudley Schools. Therefore they have excellent knowledge of SEND in the local context
  • LSS have established links with outside agencies, resulting in co-ordinated support
  • Continued Professional Development on a range of SEND topics and intervention programmes
  • Termly SENCo Forum

Our Learning Support Service currently offer:

  • 1:1 Literacy and/or Numeracy Assessments of Pupils
  • Assessments for Access Arrangements for GCSE
  • Advice and support to the school based SENCo with regards to SEND provision
  • Accredited training for a range of national interventions, many of which are listed in the Greg Brooks, Fifth Edition 'What works for children and young people with literacy difficulties'
  • Short course training
  • Bespoke INSET training covering a range of SEND topics
  • 1:1 or small group Peripatetic Teaching (reading, spelling, Phonics, High Frequency Words, Comprehension and Maths)
  • The Intensive Learning Unit (based at St. James’s CE Primary School)
  • Termly Dudley SENCo Forum
  • Work with the Dudley Educational Psychology Service following the Dyslexia Pathway in order to provide a Dyslexia diagnosis for pupils when requested by schools
  • A comprehensive Resource base

We offer specialised peripatetic teaching for primary, secondary and sixth form age pupils with specific and moderate learning difficulties and for pupils who need additional support.

SENCo Forum

The Dudley Learning Support Service facilitates a termly SENCo Forum. This is a 2 hour session at Saltwells EDC. This gives SENCos the opportunity to network with colleagues to discuss topics relevant to their role. We also have a range of guest presenters.
