A building is listed when it’s of special architectural or historic interest and thought to be of national importance and worth protecting.

There are 3 categories of listed buildings, Grade I, Grade II* and Grade II. The statutory list is compiled by the Secretary of State hence they are referred to as 'Listed Buildings'.

There are approaching 300 statutorily listed buildings and structures in Dudley and this number increases yearly, examples include the Grade I listed Church of St John the Baptist, Halesowen, the Grade II* listed Dudley drinking fountain or the Grade II listed Memorial Archway at Stourbridge War Memorial Athletic Ground.

We have also compiled a Local List of historic buildings in Dudley that do not meet the national criteria for inclusion on the statutory lists which are nevertheless worthy of protection and conservation in their own right.
